This 1979 Ferrari 308 GTS was purchased new by 4-time Indianapolis 500 winner Rick Mears, who owned the car for six years and over 17k miles. It now shows approximately 63,700 miles and is powered by a carbureted 2.9-liter quad-cam V8 paired with a 5-speed manual transaxle. The vehicle has reportedly remained in California since new, and partial records indicate a total of three registered owners. A $16k+ service was performed less than 500 miles ago, and the work included new timing belts, rebuilding the carburetors, and installing a new battery and tires. This 308 GTS is now being offered by the selling dealer with partial records, older registration cards, an original window sticker, factory manuals, and a clear California title. According to the seller, the front and rear of the vehicle have been repainted under previous ownership. Blistering and crazing of the finish is noted, along with a few small dings around the body. Factory 14” Cromodora wheels show some curb rash and wear a set of Hankook Optimo tires. The black targa panel is pictured in the gallery below. The interior is trimmed in black leather with Ferrari-branded floor mats. An older Blaupunkt cassette stereo replaces the factory unit, and an aftermarket steering wheel with a Ferrari center button has been fitted. Both seats would benefit from upholstery work according to the seller, and under 64k miles are shown on the 5-digit odometer. The traversely-mounted 2.9-liter DOHC V8 features four Weber 40 DCNF carburetors and was rated at 237 horsepower in US-spec when new. A major service performed under 500 miles ago in 2015 by Taormina Imports of San Carlos, California included new timing belts, rebuilt carburetors, a new battery, a clutch cable, and a new hood strut. Previous records documenting maintenance from Bruce Canepa Motors, Ferrari of Walnut Creek, and marque specialist Patrick Ottis are viewable in the gallery. A cold-start video is provided below.
