This 1959 750 Zagato (chassis 565298) is a rough project with many missing parts, and though the driver’s sills and floor will need replacement the opposite side has already had this work completed. A partially disassembled Fiat 600 motor is included, and the seller clearly states that if not photographed it’s not part of the sale. A hefty undertaking for sure, but a worthwhile one for someone with the necessary resources. Find it here on eBay in Bethel, Connecticut for $37,500 OBO.

American Family Across Europe in a Lancia Flaminia – Part 2 – NYC to Como

This is the first update of a epic summer road trip in progress, that our reader Seth C. is documenting via reports here on BaT. We think of it as inspiration, and his intro story (found here) caused quite a stir. Feel free to send him your feedback in the comments section below! This update contains: New York City to Lake Como (via Warsaw, Dusseldorf, Luxemburg City, Strasbourg and Zurich).

“Hello BaTers-
Our summer adventure officially began on the night of May 16, when my wife, son and I left our home in New York, taxied to JFK airport, and jumped on a plane to Europe. We originally had tickets to Budapest via Warsaw, but when we found out the OSI would not be ready, we decided to use our Polish layover as a stopping point while we figured out our options. (Glad we did – Warsaw is a fantastic city and I highly recommend a visit!) Before we took off, I had already started looking online for a replacement classic, while simultaneously pricing out the idea of taking a rental and waiting for the OSI to be completed.

Part 1: New York City – Lake Como (via Warsaw, Dusseldorf, Luxemburg City, Strasbourg and Zurich)

Several people pointed us toward viable options, including my friend Hubert from the Lancia Club in Germany. I knew Hubert had two Flaminia PF Coupes, one in very good shape and one serious restoration project that he was in the middle of, and I was pretty sure he would eventually want to sell one, so I reached out to see if he would part with the running car a little earlier then planned. Being the most helpful Lancisti I have ever met, he was quick to agree to sell it if it meant we could get our adventure back on track. We flew to Dusseldorf on the evening of May 21, and he picked us up from our hotel the following morning.

Part 1: New York City – Lake Como (via Warsaw, Dusseldorf, Luxemburg City, Strasbourg and Zurich)

Last year we registered the Greek Flavia in Germany with temporary export plates and insurance using a third party agency, so we already had experience dealing with the German system. This year it was even easier (and a lot cheaper) since both we and the car, which had all current German papers, were in Germany. This little-known process seems to be available in most European countries. Once you buy a car, you can register it for a period of time that allows you to drive it to the country you live in or to the city you will be shipping it from. Each country has slightly different rules and the main issue is the length of time you can register it for, but we found Germany quite easy to deal with both times. I know a lot of people here had questions about this process, so feel free to email me if you want any more insight.

Part 1: New York City – Lake Como (via Warsaw, Dusseldorf, Luxemburg City, Strasbourg and Zurich)

We went to the local DMV in Dusseldorf where we confirmed we could get everything done as planned, and bought insurance from the ADAC (the German AAA), which was housed in the same building. At 150 euros/month, temporary export insurance that is good in any EU nation is not cheap, but it’s cheaper than most rental car insurance! The car itself needed to be brought to the Dusseldorf DMV for a physical inspection of the VIN, so we made an appointment for later that day and continued on to Hubert’s garage. Hubert has an amazing collection of Lancias, but his speciality is definitely the Flaminia. Although he says he is not a mechanic, his background in engineering and his quantity of experience make him one of the experts in these cars. He personally restored the PF Coupe we are currently driving from a serious project car into what it is today! To see the quality of his work, check out the thread documenting the restoration of his “new” PF Coupe on Alfabb here:

Part 1: New York City – Lake Como (via Warsaw, Dusseldorf, Luxemburg City, Strasbourg and Zurich)

http://www.alfabb.com/bb/forums/other-italian-cars/212466-flaminia-coup-bugatti-wagen.html

On the way back to Hubert’s, we stopped at his local DMV to see if they could complete the paperwork without us having to go back to Dusseldorf, and after a brief discussion with the senior manager (who was about to run out the door on vacation so didn’t give it much thought) we were told “No problem.” All we needed to do was return with the Flaminia.

Part 1: New York City – Lake Como (via Warsaw, Dusseldorf, Luxemburg City, Strasbourg and Zurich)

Everything went smoothly – we got new plates, paid some fees and were all ready to go with 120 day temporary tags and title in my name registered to my New York address. The key to the process is having all the original papers, and it’s obviously easiest if both buyer and seller are there together.

Part 1: New York City – Lake Como (via Warsaw, Dusseldorf, Luxemburg City, Strasbourg and Zurich)

Hubert had spent the last few days preparing the car for us, so he and I only had to take the car back to his shop for some last minute tweaks (add front seat belts as the car had never had them, lubricate some joints, etc.) Then we went back to his house, loaded up the car with suitcases, wife and baby, and were on the road by 5pm!

Part 1: New York City – Lake Como (via Warsaw, Dusseldorf, Luxemburg City, Strasbourg and Zurich)

The first stop we had planned on the road trip was dinner in Luxembourg. Not because we needed to go there, but because we had never been and it wasn’t far off our route to Switzerland. Just one hour into the journey, however, we were hit by a torrential downpour and had our first mechanical issue – the windshield wipers stopped working! We pulled over and quickly learned that when turning the wipers on and off you have to be careful they don’t get stuck in a certain position or they will not come back on again without being manually coaxed into action. After that, it was smooth sailing to Luxemburg City and then on into France to Strasbourg, our stopping place for the night after about 500 km and six hours of driving. It wasn’t the most exciting of roads, but it got us comfortable with the car. Our first impressions had us feeling really good about the space in the cabin, but wishing the trunk was a little bigger, and a little concerned about how much gas we were going to use this summer. Overall, we were really happy and excited to be on the road just one day later than we had originally planned.

Part 1: New York City – Lake Como (via Warsaw, Dusseldorf, Luxemburg City, Strasbourg and Zurich)

Day two had us drive to Zurich for lunch and some art openings (always have to keep working!) and then down to Como right on time for our hotel reservation made six months earlier! Only 460 km and five hours of driving time that day. On the way to Zurich we passed a gorgeous Mercedes 300 SL, the first serious classic we saw on the road. Little did we know they were on the way to Villa d’Este, where they would win the award for “Car driven the furthest distance to participate in the Concorso”! Can’t wait till I manage to get a car accepted – we will have to find a way to drive it from Siberia to set a new record! The drive from Zurich to Como is stunning and a must-do for every car person on the planet. I could spend a lifetime exploring the Swiss and Italian Alps and lake region in any car you gave me, but doing it in a classic Italian is a dream come true. By the time we arrived at our hotel in Cernobbio, home to Villa D’Este, we had shaken the car down pretty well and it seemed to be in great shape. It was feeling low on power over 120km per hour, which was surprising to me since in our Flavia we could easily cruise at 160 all day long, but Hubert had told me to expect this, so although I was a bit disappointed, I didn’t think much about it.

We woke up early on the morning of May 24 and headed over to the Concorso. It is hard to describe just how amazing an event this is to those who have never been. The location, the exclusivity, the caliber of the cars and the intimate number of attendees make this the most spectacular classic car gathering on the planet. If you can possibly make it at some point, you will not regret it. It was a hot and sunny day, unlike last year, which was cold and wet, and it was filled with great cars and encounters with old friends, most importantly BAT compatriot Alex Vazeos, from whom we purchased our Flavia.

Part 1: New York City – Lake Como (via Warsaw, Dusseldorf, Luxemburg City, Strasbourg and Zurich)

Standout cars for me were the Lancia Aprilla Type 239, the Cisitalia type 202 B brought by Sergio Lugo from Argentina, the Hudson Italia, and of course the Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 GS, which won the Golden Cup. After the main event, my wife, son and I took our annual drive up the beautiful shores of Lake Como to the Grand Hotel Tremezzo, where the food and service are stellar, the views even better, and a fleet of recent Mille Miglia participant cars are parked out front. A perfect end to a perfect day.

Part 1: New York City – Lake Como (via Warsaw, Dusseldorf, Luxemburg City, Strasbourg and Zurich)

Stay tuned for more to come. The next update will be great! Thanks for following the story.”

Seller Submission: 2002 Maserati Coupe

2002 Maserati Coupe
Location: Arlington, VA
VIN: ZAMBC38A320008476
Chassis mileage:42090
Engine type: 4.2L V8 (numbers-matching) with 42090 miles

How long have you had the car? The vehicle has been owned by our family since 2009.

Describe the body condition: The body presents well, but is not perfect. There are several very small door dings on the passenger side. Additionally, there are small chips in the front – consistent with a car that was used for daily driving. All of these are visible upon close inspection in the pictures provided.

Describe the mechanical condition: The car is in excellent shape mechanically and has a fresh 2 year service performed. This car also has some not-so-immediate maintenance items for the next owner to attend to. The most significant of these maintenance items will be a clutch replacement and brake service. These common issues are already factored into the pricing of this Maserati.

Included documentation: All service records from our ownership including the most recent 2 year service at ECS of Virginia. Clear title is in hand and is ready to transfer.

What makes this car special? This Maserati has a spectacular color combination of Verde Goodwood or dark green exterior and Cuoio or tobacco colored leather that gives the car a rather distinguished look, best appreciated in person. Also, at this price point, there are not a lot of quality Italian exotics available for sale.

BaT Exclusive: Clean 1965 Alfa Romeo Giulia Super

This 1965 Alfa Romeo Giulia Super (chassis AR 317014) is a clean and early production example offered for sale by its owner of 12 years who says the car is mechanically sorted. Purchased from a UK-based classic dealer who themselves sourced it in Rome, the car was dry, original and straight but in need of some mechanical work—work that is detailed receipts totaling more than $20,000. Garaged when not in use, this rare, front bench seat equipped model is said to be quite reliable and has been driven several times on 600+ mile trips during its time with the seller. It is now available in Nyack, New York for $30,000.

BaT Exclusive: Sorted 1965 Alfa Romeo Giulia Super

The car has a noticeable patina but presents as a nicely aged example with good bones. Paint is a factory correct respray done in Italy prior to the seller’s stewardship, and is described as high driver standard with a good but not overdone shine. Metal is all original barring some minor door bottom corrosion repairs, and though paint does show a few cracks and stone chips the exterior is entirely presentable when viewed as a whole. Carello lights like those shown here are always welcome on old Alfas.

BaT Exclusive: Sorted 1965 Alfa Romeo Giulia Super

Carpets have been replaced and seats benefit from newer stuffing and upholstery, and though correct, imported fabric was used the driver’s seat shows some premature wear-through on the outer squab. The car’s headliner is said to have some minor discoloration but remains all original and perfectly adequate for day-to-day use. The dash shows houses clear, fully functional gauges, period Blaupunkt radio, shows no cracks and features clean, undamaged veneers. Door cards show nicely as well, and front seat, inertia-reel equipped three point and rear lap belts offer a bit of added peace of mind.

BaT Exclusive: Sorted 1965 Alfa Romeo Giulia Super

Still running its matching numbers 1600 twin-cam, the car benefits from extensive work fully documented in the Flickr album and slideshow below. Brakes, suspension, gearbox, engine, and differential have all been serviced, and the car is now offered in a very well tuned and ready condition. A few highlights of work completed includes a new clutch, rebuilt front end, boiled and re-sealed gas tank, new fluids, seals, bushings and other wearable items, valve adjustment, full tune-up and much more.

BaT Exclusive: Sorted 1965 Alfa Romeo Giulia Super

Tires are correct 155 section with good remaining tread, floors and door cavities are fully Waxoyled, and the grille and rear bumper are rare NOS pieces. A floor-mount 5-speed car, it is said to run, stop, ride and steer excellently.

This 1967 Maserati Mistral 4000 is an alloy-bodied example that comes fitted with the desirable 4-Liter engine. The seller claims the engine was in running condition when placed into storage six years ago, but is not currently operational, although the engine is said to turn freely. This Maserati Merak is claimed to have 38,000 miles, and the Seller also claims no rust.  Also mentioned is the Merak’s original but worn paint, and weathered and shrunk leather seats, although the Citroen SM sourced dash is not cracked.  The Merak is also said to have an Ansa exhaust and to retain all of it’s original smog equipment, although as a 1975 it’s smog exempt in California.  Available euro bumper conversions really bring out the original Giugiaro design, also shared with the Merak’s big brother, the Bora. This 1957 Lancia Appia Serie II (Chassis C10S6339) is said to have been restored in 2013 and is in excellent mechanical condition. It looks particularly elegant in dark navy, and like other Lancias of this era, the factory build quality was excellent, which really was remarkable given the state of post-war Italy in the late ’40s and early ’50s. Rare Project: 1961 Lancia Flavia Berlina Project

$

0

This 1961 Lancia Flavia Berlina is sold as a non-runner with two engines, a 1500 and an 1800. The photos and description are beyond sparse, but the Body is described as ‘clean.’ The car seems straight, complete and original in the photos, although it’s hard to tell. The Dark Blue paint could be original and might take a shine with some buffing. Find it here on Craigslist in Lancaster, California, for $5000.

1961 Lancia Flavia Berlina Project

No mention is made of rust, and while there is surface rust on some engine components, the car’s current Antelope Valley location is part of the Mojave desert, which might bode well for the rust situation.

1961 Lancia Flavia Berlina Project

The ‘rough’ interior looks quite weathered, with a melting dash and plain vinyl seats that are ripped. The cool curved lower dash is clearly visible, and reminds us of the plastic early Citroen DS curved dash. What looks like an aftermarket radio is installed below the dash, and this project has keys – always a plus.

1961 Lancia Flavia Berlina Project

The Flavia comes with a non-running flat-4 1800cc engine installed, and another non-running 1500cc engine is included. The installed motor looks complete, but no description is given as to engine condition beyond ‘neither runs,’ so a little more digging might reveal more information.

Originally, this 1961 model would have a 1500cc, the 1800 was introduced later in the model’s life cycle and was offered with both carb and mechanical Kugelfischer injection, similar to BMW Ti / Tii models.

When new, this 1500 Flavia sedan was tested at 18.5 seconds 0-60 MPH, not exactly blistering performance, but it made 30 MPG, an impressive figure for the day and the specification of the car.

1961 Lancia Flavia Berlina Project

A rear view clearly shows the wonderful badging, a relatively straight bumper and compound taillights. California ‘Sunset’ vanity plates mean a registration sometime in the mid-to-late 1980s. The Seller notes the car ‘needs registration’ which could mean fees due, or that it’s no longer in the California DMV computer, making it easy to obtain a title.

This Flavia would have to be a labor of love, but we can see a unique and interesting project here. If the mechanicals are not too far gone and the car isn’t rotted underneath, perhaps a drive-as-you-go restoration would be possible. We would love to see this Flavia on a Vintage Rally event someday!
